Saucony Peregrine 13 Impressions

I’ve been a fan of the Saucony Peregrine model for a long time. After having some issues with the Peregrine 12, I tried some shoes from Salomon and HOKA.

I always wanted to return to the Peregrine so I kept an eye out for sales to pick up a cheaper pair. I managed to get the “ARROYO” colour in a Black Friday deal, paying just £78.

Specifications

  • Cost: £78 (November 2023)
  • Weight: 9.2oz (261g)
  • Offset: 4mm (28mm/24mm)
  • Lug depth: 5mm

This is a very early impressions post because I’ve got a good feeling for what these shoes offer and there aren’t any serious concerns that I need to keep an eye on.

Style

I love bright colours to stand out on the trails with orange and yellow being my favourites. I nearly bought the grey or green versions earlier in the year because I really wanted to try them out so I’m glad I waited.

Not everyone was as impressed by the colour. One friend described the yellow as a combination of mustard and vomit. So they’re clearly an acquired taste.

Likes

First off, the grip is really good. I’ve been a bit disappointed with the grip on the HOKA Torrent 3 so it’s good to be back in a shoe that gives me confidence in the mud. The conditions have been very wet and slippery for the last few weeks so I’ve given them a good test.

The tongue is gusseted and the upper locks the foot in securely. The toe box is bigger than previous versions, which is good for allowing the toes to splay.

The midsole feels more comfortable than previous versions but the shoe is still light and responsive.

Dislikes

The only feature I don’t like is the thickness of the heel collar. I’d prefer a bit more padding but this isn’t a big issue.

Summary

After trying several different models in the last couple of years, I’ve come to realise that there isn’t a perfect shoe. You have to take into account so many factors.

The Peregrine 13 is going to be my winter shoe. It handles the mud really well and gives me confidence on more technical sections. Despite its weight and responsiveness, it feels more rugged than the Torrent 2 and 3.

I now have a few different pairs that I can grab depending on the conditions.
