Merrell Agility Peak 5 Impressions

I’ve just passed 100 miles in the Merrell Agility Peak 5 trail shoes so here are my initial impressions.

Merrell were a really popular casual shoe brand when I was younger. I knew they did walking shoes as well but I never considered them a serious trail running company.

I’d seen some reviews last year that were really positive and some friends have recommended them so I was on the lookout for a bargain. Back in October I managed to pick them up for half the retail price.

Specifications

  • Cost: £74 (October 2024)
  • Weight: 10.6oz (300g)
  • Offset: 6mm (31mm/25mm)
  • Lug depth: 5mm

Style

There was only one style on offer so I wasn’t able to get the really cool designs. However, the monochrome and orange matches a lot of my other running gear.

I love the slash on the heel that creates a very dynamic profile.

Likes

My initial feelings after putting them on and walking around the house for a bit were very positive. It’s always a concern that I’m going to immediately have issues with the fit, especially with a new brand, but these felt great and the size was perfect.

The upper feels like fabric, with a soft and supple material. These are one of the heavier shoes I’ve had for a while but they didn’t feel it.

After my first run, I was already considering buying another pair. They immediately felt like a second skin and the grip was impressive.

I know from experience that issues can still appear after the initial run so I tempered my excitement and took them out a few more times in some pretty grim conditions.

They continued to impress with a comfortable midsole for tarmac and longer runs, excellent grip and a responsive feel.

Dislikes

I don’t have much to report here. The laces are quite thin and regularly need adjusting after 8-10 miles.

I recently noticed some of the overlays on the upper coming away. I don’t think these are structural but I wasn’t expecting to see this after less than 100 miles.

Summary

My biggest concern about these shoes was the drop. 6mm is at the upper end of my preferred range. After 100 miles I’m happy to say it’s not an issue, the Agility Peak 5s feel and perform perfectly.

It’s really hard to put my finger on what makes these such a good shoe. Comparing them to recent shoes, they’re more comfortable than the Thundercross and grippier than the Peregrine.

Overall, the Agility Peak 5s are a fantastic surprise. I didn’t know what to expect but I wasn’t expecting close to perfection.
