Conditions today were very similar to Friday. Dry and cool with a grey sky. Great for running but not so good for photos. This is the view as you come out of Tyn Y Coed woods and make your way across the fields to the Garth. I wanted to complete a steady half marathon distance…

I love running in the snow so after last night’s weather I decided to head up Craig yr Allt. Sadly the rain had turned most of the snow into slush! Most of the ascent was freezing cold slushy mud but I had a blast! This photo was from the best section of pure snow. I…

    14 December 2024

I very rarely run on subsequent days but I really felt like I needed it yesterday and today was just lovely out. The sun was still low in the sky as I climbed up the Garth. I bumped into a group of She Runs: Cardiff runners at the trig and took a photo for them.…

    30 November 2024

Well…today’s run was eventful. I’ve only had two falls in 10 years of trail running and today’s was the most embarrassing. Thankfully, only a handful of sheep witnessed my shame as I fell on that notorious obstacle, a flat section of grass. I think I stumbled quite a few steps as I had time to…

A late run today as it got dark but, sadly, there weren’t any epic sunsets. I headed up Craig yr Allt and enjoyed the quiet of the hills despite the lack of views..

I braved the western ascent of Craig yr Allt today. My gamble that the trails were clear paid off, the bracken has receded and the routes are visible. I’ve avoided this segment over the summer because the ground is very rocky and I didn’t want to risk an injury because I can’t see where I’m…

    19 September 2024

The weather was cooler today and perfect for running. I ran the long route up the Taff Trail, heading north, from Tongwynlais to the Penrhos Cutting. This is a 1-2% grade segment that looks and feels flat until you realise it’s hurting more than normal. I climbed and descended Craig yr Allt the same way…

    27 July 2024

I’ve always loved the view of this field from Craig Yr Allt. This is where you look over from the bench in Fforest Fawr up the valley. It always seems to catch the light and stand out from the surrounding woodland. I had a free morning so I set out planning to do 12 –…

The weather’s still fine here in South Wales so I took advantage of a quiet morning and enjoyed a few miles on Craig yr Allt. This is the view of the Garth with some beautiful dashes of colour. The trails are quite overgrown with fern and bracken but they’re still accessible.

Today was one of those runs where I didn’t have a plan. I just went out and started running. I haven’t been up Craig yr Allt recently so I hit the Taff Trail to warm up before reaching the hills. It was very warm but I had plenty of water and I’d applied sun cream…
